The Effect of Texture on Perception and Measurement of Whiteness

A uniform white base is needed for textile substrate coloration and printing. Whiteness helps characterize bleaching and brightening process efficiency. The CIE whiteness index (CIE WI) of knitted samples, with different surface patterns prepared from scoured wool and bleached cotton yarns, was measured after wet processing. Woolen knit samples were bleached and brightened under identical optimized conditions. Cotton samples were identically brightened with an optimal amount of commercial fluorescent brightening agent (FBA). A panel of naive observers assessed the sample's perceptual whiteness. The least-textured surface was ranked as the whitest. However, the inter-observer variability in ranking samples of varying texture was significant. CIE WI values modestly correlated against visual assessments. Probability tools were used to predict and improve correlations among measured colorimetric properties and perceptual assessments.
