The use of non-thermal, high density atmospheric pressure plasma to produce fabrics with high degrees of water and oil repellency is discussed. Different atmospheric plasma systems are compared and results of polymerizing fluoro and non-fluoro acrylate monomers on cotton fabric are presented. The treated fabric was characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques and the repellencies evaluated using AATCC Test Methods. Advantages of atmospheric pressure plasma treatments over conventional finishing techniques are given.
