Correctly Assessing the Value of Our Research to Management Education

Pearce and Huang (2012, this issue) have taken the welcome initiative of examining the value of research to management education through their discussion of the difference between useful and less useful management research. They regard research as useful if it is "actionable," defined in the following way: "we decided that research was potentially useful if any person could possibly take some kind of organizational action based on knowing its results" (Pearce & Huang, this issue). They go on to classify research articles as either "actionable" or "not actionable," using this definition and their own judgment. On the basis of their classification, they report a decline in the portion of actionable research in management as reflected in articles in the leading journals Administrative Science Quarterly and Academy of Management Journal.
