Harvard Commencement Address, June 1997 For all their differences, each book reviewed in this issue highlights the importance of histories, collective or personal. We are all products of our past choices, and, of course, the choices made by others. To fully understand who we are, and why we do what we do, we must understand what happened in the past that contributed to who we are today.
