摘要

Employee well-being is crucial to effective management practice. This idea has been with us for some time, as the opening quote from Rexford Hersey, one of the early leading minds in management thought, suggests. In fact, by the late 1920s, the happy/productive worker thesis stated that workers who were "happy" with their work should have higher job performance and be less likely to turnover than those who weren't. Of late, research has supported these expectations. For example, bivariate correlations ranging from .30 to .50 have recently been established between employee well-being and job performance. Research investigating the connection between well-being and employee retention appears to be equally promising. Indeed, employee well-being may eventually prove to be a more robust predictor of whether employees decide to stay or leave their jobs than either job satisfaction or job commitment.
