Creating OER: One librarian's experience with a homegrown open educational resources project

One secondary outcome of this project I actually found highly valuable is that involvement with locally produced OER provides an opportunity for libraries to engage with faculty and students along several library axes including information literacy, collection building, and preservation. Relationships can be built along with content. It is also ecologically proximal to other niches in the higher education environment such as institutional repositories and copyright issues and seems to be a good fit with how the library interacts with the campus community. In Southeast Missouri State University's experience with the project, we had strong initial support from the provost and president that provided a good solid foundation with which to start. As mentioned above, one of the scariest and most exhilarating aspects of undertaking a project like this was the lack of rules, or even conventions, but I believe this actually plays to the strengths of higher education in general and libraries in particular.
