Foregoing a traditional introduction, the authors begin directly with a statement in Chapter 1 of the purpose of the book and how they propose to meet it, beginning with a definition of "one-shot library instruction." One-shot sessions are defined by what they are not: "not a library tour, orientation, scavenger hunt, or an isolated session." The first table defines how information literacy instruction is different from bibliographic instruction, explaining that the former is not the latter conveniently renamed. Cultivating and maintaining relationships with faculty are the most important strategies in instruction. Librarians need to market the many ways that they can assist faculty and students in achieving their mutual goals of successful research papers. Ongoing communication can prevent misunderstandings, such as the librarian expecting the faculty member to attend the instruction session with the students, while the instructor expects the librarian to conduct the instruction solo, without the faculty member being present.
