Electrospinning water-soluble polymers containing photo-curable groups and subjecting the extruded material to ultraviolet (UV) radiation produces crosslinked superabsorbent nano-scale fibres suitable for use in hygiene products, according to International Patent Publication WO 2014/053345. In the patent, Process for Producing Water-Absorbing Polymer Fibres, BASF SE of Ludwigshafen, Germany, says its method overcomes a number of disadvantages associated with existing techniques, which use conventional crosslinking agents; for instance, the tendency of conventional crosslinkers to undergo intermolecular addition reactions and problems resulting from the polymer's restricted solubility influence the effectiveness of the crosslinking, ultimately to the detriment of the solubility and absorption properties of the fibres.
