摘要

It is now well documented that the incidence of allergies and asthma has been increasing worldwide in recent decades, and these increases exceed that which would be expected from better diagnosing or increased reporting (von Mutius, 1998; Holgate, 1999). Interestingly, it is not only allergic diseases - which are a Th2 polarization of the immune system - that are on the increase; diseases with exaggerated Th1 pathology, such as irritable bowel syndrome, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn's disease, are also on the rise (Hadley, 2004). The increased prevalence of these diseases, too rapid to be explained genetically, seems to be associated with a western lifestyle. In 1989 Strachan (Strachan, 1989), proposed that the association of asthma with birth order and small affluent, families might be related to reduced exposure to infectious diseases in early life - the so called Hygiene Hypothesis. Recently investigators have suggested that a properly functioning immune system balances Th1, Th2, and T regulatory responses and that microbial exposures in early life could in fact help stimulate the developing immune system into the proper balance (Romagnani, 2004; Prioult and Nagler-Anderson, 2005).
