The author has clearly set out to produce a comprehensive reference work on the subject.rnThe opening chapter presents a concise history of aeronautical activity from the propulsion perspective. This coverage spans the period 250BC to the present day, so it is necessarily brief. The earliest works amount to little more than crude experiments or toys, but they were the earliest underpinning steps in the story of flight. Naturally enough it is only when we reach the 19th and 20th centuries that more substantial matters are addressed.
