An analytical method has been described for determining the perturbation of a steady, uniform stream of incompressible, viscous fluid by the presence of an infinitely-thin, flat plate aligned with the undisturbed flow. The perturbation consists of a series of approximations; each except the first, and thus the perturbation as a whole, consists of continuous distributions of two types of disturbances. These have been named drag poles and mixing eddies. Implementation of the theory will presumably require modelling of the perturbation by populations comprising groupings of finite-strength poles and eddies. The first approximation consists of drag poles only. Extension of the present method to cover more general problems, including those involving three-dimensional and time-dependent flow, may be possible.
