In one of the quotes Professor Bartsch places in the epigraph to the second edition of his book on international aviation law, he quotes from a statement made by William Voss that "aviation law is not just a subject for lawyers" and, while that is perhaps debatable (for those who like to debate such philosophical and jurisprudential statements), it is certainly the approach which the author takes throughout the text, writing in a manner and style that is both thorough and easily accessible.I have not, unfortunately, had the pleasure to meet Professor Bartsch but he strikes me as the type of person one would very much like to be sat next to at dinner; someone who is both entertaining and knowledgeable but who wears that knowledge lightly. Much like the first edition of his book, this edition is well-written, easily accessible to the lay as well as professional reader (and that includes, somewhere in the middle I suppose, those professionals who are new to the field of aviation law). It is also thorough (examples from case law are placed throughout the text and have been updated to provide recent cases where relevant) and brought up to date with chapters updated to reflect recent developments in, of particular interest to many, international carriage by air and the accordant losses which can result from this, commercial and competition law, and environmental law. Professor Bartsch includes a very useful glossary of legal terms at the rear of the book which will undoubtedly be of assistance to the lawyer as much as to the layman.
