Six USMC AV-8B Harriers were destroyed (and two severely damaged) and two US marines were killed, including the AV-8B squadron commander on 14 September when Taliban insurgents attacked the Camp Bastion coalition military base in southwest Afghanistan. Around 15-20 insurgents, dressed in US Army uniforms penetrated the base armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. The attackers fired at and set fire to the aircraft, as well as damaging hangars and three refuelling stations. All but one of the attackers were killed.
