On 25 August, the Zimbabwean executive of PresidentEmmerson Mnangagwa received a stamped letter fromUS law firm Steptoe & Johnson, a legal salvo whichopened a new round in a legal battle which since 2010has set Harare against the von Pezold family.Landowners in Zimbabwe since the end of the 1980s, thevon Pezold family, who are descended from old Germanicnobility and hold German, Swiss and Austrian nationality,were, twenty years ago, one of the prime targets of theso-called "fast-track" land redistribution programme ledby Robert Mugabe. Nearly a third of the von Pezold's vastestates were first confiscated and then redistributed,and since the early 2000s they have been occupied bysmall farming communities, in part run by war veteransclose to the leadership of ZANU-PF (the ruling party).
