The 489th Bomb Group, was reactivated as an Air Force Reserve unit during a ceremony at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas on October 17, 2015. The reactivation of this historic Bomb Group, Air Force Reserve Command's first ever B-1B unit, encompasses more than 250 airmen across the 345th Bomb Squadron, 489th Maintenance Squadron and the 489th Aerospace Medical Flight. The 489th Bomb Group (BG) is a geographically separated unit under the 307th Bomb Wing (BW), which is headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. It will operate in a classic association with the 7th BW at Dyess. The 489th team will be working closely with the 7th BW, providing a formal training mission and combat support operations to the B-1 community. The 7th Bomb Wing and its B-1 bomber assets were recently placed under the operational control of the Eighth Air Force at Barksdale, part of a centralisation of all national bomber components in one community under Global Strike Command. The new B-1 unit will be furthering the air force's total force integration, which aims to integrate active duty air force, Air Force Reserve Command and Air National Guard components to complete the mission.
