The US Air Force is planning to replace the Northrop T-38 Talon advanced trainer. As the first step in the T-Xrnprogramme, Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is conducting an "analysis of alternatives" for a future Talon stand-in. First flown in 1959, put into service in 1961, the Talon is a supersonic, fighter-type aircraft closely related to the F-5 family of fighters. The Talon probably offers more performance than is needed in an advanced trainer and more than its replacement may have.
