Many aircraft enthusiasts regard the Convair 990 as one of the most beautiful airliners ever produced. Pilots loved to fly it and passengers enjoyed the jetliner's quiet, comfortable cabin. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Airline accountants saw the type as a fuel guzzler that was less economical to operate than its competitors. Shareholders and directors at General Dynamics (Convair's parent company) had an even dimmer view of the 990 which 'spilled torrents of red ink over the corporate balance sheets'. The 990 was an aesthetic masterpiece - and a financial disaster.
