The military aviation forces of The Netherlands owe a debt of gratitude to one particular unit that has been serving the country's military-training needs for 32 years. Created on October 10, 1988, the Royal Netherlands Air Force's (RNLAF) 131 Squadron operates as the basic military aviator training unit, known as EMVO (Elementaire Militaire Vlieger Opleiding). Since then it has trained all future pilots for both the RNLAF and the Royal Netherlands Navy, the latter for 860 Squadron's NHI NH90-NFH helicopters based at the navy's helicopter base at De Kooy Airfield near Den Helder. Before EMVO came into being, Dutch pilots received their basic flight training at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) programme at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, However, as the RNLAF was faced with a high percentage of students not completing their syllabuses, it decided to install its own training facilities at RNLAF Air Base Woensdrecht, before sending them on to Texas.
