Rotorcraft are the workhorses of the US Marine Corps, providing battlefield mobility and fire support. So valuable and overworked are these aircraft that no Marine helicopter squadrons were cut during the post-Cold War drawdown of the mid-1990s. Over three decades Boeing CH-46A/D/F Sea Knights have been upgraded to the 'E' model. Also known as the 'Phrog', 215 of the type have undergone upgrade programmes designed to extend their service life to 2018 and to restore the original design lift capability to 10.8 tons.
