When the Royal Air Force's last English Electric Canberra PR.9s retired in July, they brought down the curtain on an RAF career that has lasted an astonishing 56 years. Even in the aircraft's primary bomber role, the Canberra remained in the frontline for 22 years. That said, as we prepare for the departure of the RAF's last SEPECAT Jaguars after a 34-year career, and as the Panavia Tornado's career as a bomber looks set to last until 2023 or beyond (a frontline lifespan of at least 42 years) the Canberra's 22 years as a frontline bomber may not seem extraordinary.
