IT'S BEEN such a bittersweet year for the Boeing 747 on so many levels. Its lead engineer, Joe Sutter, passed away on August 30 at age 95. Both Air Fiance (AF) and Cathay Pacific (CX) (Airways, January 2017) decommissioned their 747s from commercial service in January and October, respectively, after over four decades of operation. And, in October, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operated its final scheduled Boeing 747-400 service into Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten (SXM), unofficially 'the world's coolest landing' over Maho Beach.
