Oman Aviation Services was formed in May 1981 from a merger of the light aircraft division of then-national carrier Gulf Air (Airways, January 2004) and Oman International Services. Initial service comprised the domestic run to Salalah in the south of the Sultanate of Oman, using a leased Boeing 737-200 of Gulf Air. Additional activities included air charter, oil exploration support, as well as ground handling and in-flight catering. The fleet grew to as many as ten aircraft, including such types as the De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, Beech King Air 200, and Cessna Citation. The mainstay, however, was the Fokker F27 Friendship, of which the carrier had five. From March 1993, the company began operating as Oman Air and today has a fleet of ATR42-500 and Boeing 737NG (Next-Generation) aircraft. The first international flight—the brief leg to Dubai [Dubayy] in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—started in July that year, with service to Trivandrum in India starting four months later. Over the next two years services to Kuwait [Al Kuwayt], then Colombo and Mumbai (formerly Bombay) followed. In March 1996 a code-share agreement was reached with Swissair (Airways, May 2002) on flights to Zuerich. During 1996 and 1997, further route expansion saw inauguration of services to Dhaka (Bangladesh), Abu Dhabi [Abu Zaby], Doha [Ad Dawhah], and Chennai (formerly Madras) in India.
