摘要

Every commercial pilot has a story about his or her first flying job, the one that gave you your first dollar to fly an airplane. Defined, of course, as the first time the cash flow reversed and someone actually paid you money for your newly acquired aviating skills. When you fly airplanes for a paycheck, you appreciate such things, and remember those early days of your flying career when you were greener than the grass of an Irish meadow in early springtime. I recently searched my old, dusty logbooks in the attic and found the details of one such story: my own first full-time flying job―in a venerable Douglas DC-3. At the ripe old age of 24, possessing a multi-engine commercial pilot's license with ink barely dry, and the grand total of 350 hours of flight time―the rest of my experience was false courage born of ignorance―I sat across an oak desk from an old man in a smoke-filled office at the back of a hangar in Detroit. Taking the smoldering cigar from his mouth he uttered the words that I will never forget: "Congratulations, son, you're hired. Ground school starts Monday at eight am sharp." He smiled and stuck out his hand for a congratulatory shake. So began my long journey in aviation.
