One of the most successful small airplane manufacturers is Piper. The company's origins lie with the Taylor Brothers Aircraft Manufacturing Company, formed in 1927 and which moved to Bradford, Pennsylvania, the following year. An interest in the financially struggling company was acquired by local successful oil mogul William Thomas Piper, who bought Taylor outright in December 1935. Two years later, by which time the company had moved to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, W T Piper changed the concern's name by using his own―to Piper Aircraft Corporation. An upgraded model of C G Taylor's 1930 Cub, the J-3 Cub―undoubtedly the most famous of any aircraft Piper built―was introduced at the same time. The two-seater stayed in production until 1947, by which time more than 20,000 had been built in more than a dozen versions. Counting the high-wing J-3 derivatives, such as the PA-18 Super Cub, plus the earlier Cubs, along with the succeeding PA-20 Pacer, PA-22 Tri-Pacer and Colt, more than 52,000 aircraft were completed by 1964.
