During the post-World War Ⅱ period, Nederlands Nieuw Guinea (Dutch New Guinea―now Irian Jaya) was one of the most remote regions in the world to be served by an airline. Forty years after its closure, Airways reviews the Dutch colonial airline, with the unusual name of De Kroonduif, which served this distant outpost of The Netherlands. Topographically, the terrain of what was once Nederlands Nieuw Guinea (NNG) varied from swamp lands on the south coast to rolling savannah, which ascended the huge mountainous spine of the inland with its elevated valleys, before descending to the northern coastline pitted with offshore tropical islets. When the war ended, the Marine Luchtvaart Dienst (MLD, Dutch Navy) restarted air services in the Dutch East Indies. In 1946, these were then taken over―on paper at least―by KNILM (Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij)―the Netherlands East Indies arm of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij). Although KNILM personnel were involved, the services were flown by the VTG (Vliegtuig Transport Groep) under the title NIGAT (Netherlands Indies Government Air Transport). On August 1, 1947, KNILM/VTG/NIGAT was absorbed into KLM, which continued operations until 1949, when newly independent Indonesia's national airline, Garuda Indonesian Airways, was formed in a joint venture between the government and KLM.
