Tens of thousands of impoverished Puerto Ricans who migrated to the USA over the past several decades have tended to settle in New York City-as did immigrants from other countries such as Italy, Ireland, etc, who began arriving early in the 19th century. Unlike their counterparts from Europe and elsewhere, the Puerto Ricans were already US citizens when they set foot in New York, thanks to the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917, which automatically confers US citizenship on any resident of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also setting Puerto Ricans apart, they represented a bi-directional immigration wave, with many of them travelling back and forth between the 'old country' and their new homeland.
