It is generally agreed that the world aluminium industry needs a low temperature electrolyte in aluminium production, in order to save energy and material consumption. The present paper reports laboratory experimental results of metal solubility determination in molten cryolite-alumina systems with low cryolite ratio, and the respective influences of excess AlF_3 content, superheat temperature, and Al_2O_3 and LiF contents on the metal solubility are examined. The function of side insulation in the graphite crucible used is also discussed, and methods for the measurement of metal solubility are compared.
