Airbus has announced that it will install a new aluminium device called the Vortex Generator on all their new-model A320 planes. Lufthansa, Air France and other airlines are to retrofit this small component to their existing fleet of Airbus single-aisle jets in a bid to keep down this particular noise which seems to only affect this type of aircraft. The noise, which has been likened to the whistling sound you hear when blowing on to an open beer bottle, happens when air passes over circular openings used to equalise the pressure in fuel tanks mounted inside each wing. The new device substantially lowers this noise by six decibels and supports the mounting pressure on manufacturers to produce quieter and greener aircrafts in the future. The Vortex Generator has been developed by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) after a decade of research. The device which is made out of a 5-cm triangular piece of aluminium sheet reduces noise by diverting wind from vents upstream on the underside of the wings when the landing gear and flaps are deployed for landing.
