Shares in the heavy equipment sector edged upwards in April and May, but on a long-term scale they still look weak. ACT's Heavy Equipment Index (HEI), which measures the strength of the sector remains some 16 percent lower than it was a year ago. At the same time, mainstream indicators like the Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ are anywhere from 8 percent to 20 percent stronger than they were this time last year. The up-tick for heavy equipment shares in recent weeks was linked to the first quarter annual results season.
