摘要

The physics of elementary particles in the 20th century was distinguished by the observation of particles whose existence had been predicted by theorists sometimes decades earlier. There were also particles no one had predicted that just appeared. Five of them are of interest to me here. In order of increasing modernity, they are the neutrino, the pi meson, the anti-proton, the quark and the Higgs boson. Let's begin with the neutrino. On the 4th of December 1930, Wolfgang Pauli sent a letter to a group of colleagues who were attending a physics conference in Tubingen. He addressed them as "Dear Radioactive Ladies and Gentlemen." Pauli apologized for not being able to attend the conference. A very good dancer who had a fondness for women, he explained that he wanted to attend a ball in Zurich instead. The letter is one of the most remarkable documents in 20th-century physics.
