Key View: Consumers seek greater insight into their food and drink purchases, not just the nutritional information but increasingly, into how environmentally friendly products are. We believe 2022 will mark the beginning of Carbon Labelling being actioned, with the drive being led by food & drink brands themselves, although we highlight that government regulation is likely in the longer term. The focus of government regulation in 2022, will be on the high fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) segment, with regulation set to move beyond labelling, into advertising and retail restrictions. A food and drink segment also facing greater regulation and oversight in the Alternative Protein sector. For Mass Grocery Retail (MGR), 2022 will be a year of adaptation and evolution as traditional MGR players explore new ways to attract consumers, Dark Kitchens and Discounters face pressure on their market share from the rise of the Ultra-Discount segment.
