It was carburetor ice that provided a thrill from a chill leading to a kill-the killing of my engine, that is. Although indicating 60 mph, my machine went silent, leaving me with just enough energy to make the side of the road. German-made powerplants are very reliable, but when I popped the hood on my Volkswagen Bug-yep, I was driving my college car at the time-I spied the reason for its seizin': The induction tubes leading to the cylinders were frosted white and ice cold to the touch. I was going nowhere. So I had some dinner, a good Dutch beer, and made a call to my mechanic for advice (a strategy I call the "Heineken Maneuver"). I described the problem, after which my mechanic told me that I needed a "tube cleaning."
