In October 2004, just before the opening of the Euronaval exhibition, the French shipbuilding industry reached a major milestone: the Brest Shipyard put afloat the first LHD ship of Mistral class, only outwardly resembling a traditional landing helicopter dock, being in fact a much more advanced project. It was not by chance that the French Navy designated her as a BPC (force projection and command vessel).
