When the 82d Sustainment Brigade prepared to deploy to Afghanistan in 2009, it decided to establish a rear provisional command consisting of Active and Reserve component Soldiers that could perform the brigade's Fort Bragg sustainment mission. Many scholars judge General Creighton W. Abrams' plan known as the Abrams Doctrine, which set up the Army so that the Nation can never go into major conflict without calling up the Army Reserve components, to be brilliant. The doctrine has certainly been decisive in the conflicts since 2001, to which the Army National Guard and Army Reserve have provided thousands of troops in support of the Active Army both in the continental United States and in theater operations.
