A respected think tank has revealed that most of the world's nations hiked their military budgets last year, marking the first increase in spending since the 2008 crisis. However, the crash in oil prices that started in 2014 has begun to reverse this trend in many oil revenue-dependent countries with further cuts in spending are expected in 2016. World military expenditure totalled almost $1.7 trillion in 2015, an increase of 1% in real terms from 2014, according to new figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The data is released April 5 this year to coincide with the start of the Stockholm Forum on Security and Development, is annual update of the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database.

7. Commodity prices have risen sharply since 2006. This may benefit developing countries specialized on primary exports, but poverty may increase. Uruguay is a net exporter of primary products and a net importer of oil.
