Since men started fighting ages ago, commanders have always long for a bird's eye view of the battlefield. However, not until the creation of hot air balloons, airplanes and later, satellites, that the wish came true. Despite the advances, commanders in the field still have to rely on soldiers acting as scouts to seek out the enemy. In recent times, however, the advent of man-portable drones have finally realised the dream for a bird's eye view of the battlefield. The drones are small and more importantly, cheap enough, to be distributed down to the battalion level, ensuring commanders in the field get the information without any delays. The drones could also be used to direct artillery and close-support air strikes could be conducted in a timely and accurate fashion in support of the unit in the field.
