摘要

The field of international trade has shifted its focus from trade flows and comparative advantages at the country and industry level to the micro analysis of firm behavior. At this burgeoning frontier, scholars have incorporated various aspects of firm heterogeneity to scrutinize what happens inside the firm. One aspect is the firm's decision to enter foreign markets. Economists typically regard the internationalization of the firm as an outcome. The seminal Melitz (2003) model demonstrates that firm productivity determines the internationalization decision as only the most productive and innovative firms are able to bear the fixed costs associated with exporting. However, such a view is static and cannot explain the ontology of productivity and innovative capabilities. Moreover, the current empirical support is deeply rooted in observations of large firms from advanced economies.
