The present project will demonstrate that a packaged air cycle heating and cooling unit for buildings is feasible and offers a practical alternative to boilers and chillers. The unit has been built and will provide the heating and cooling for the conference suit at FRPERC. In the remainder of the project the predicted performance will be verified, and the energy consumption and CO2 emissions calculated for the annual load profiles of a range of buildings and compared to conventional systems. The energy consumption of this unit is less than that of conventional systems for buildings that have a significant proportion of their heating and cooling loads coincident. Therefore emissions of greenhouse gasses from the unit, both direct and from power stations supplying them with energy, are reduced compared to conventional systems. There is no possibility of local emissions of ozone depleting or harmful gasses emanating from the unit. Finally the reliability of the units and their ability to operate for long periods of time without attention will be very attractive to building users and owners.
