摘要

Air cycle refrigeration, sometimes known as the Joule cycle or reversed Brayton cycle, is a sub-set of the gas cycle. The attraction of using air as a refrigerant is obvious; air is free, safe and harmless to the environment. This contrasts sharply with the majority of refrigerants used in conventional vapour compression systems which are either environmentally harmful or are potentially hazardous by being toxic or flammable. Air cycles are the basis of most aircraft cooling and cabin air conditioning systems. Attempts to develop air cycle systems for buildings and other land based applications has to date only met with limited success, partly due to the perceived low energy efficiency of air cycle systems. This paper describes ongoing work by the University of Bristol and BRE to develop and demonstrate an air cycle system to providing cooling and heating in buildings, with similar or lower energy consumption and CO{sub}2 emissions compared with conventional heating and cooling plant.
