How the basic design parameters for chillers, pumps, and cooling towers can be optimized to accomplish both reduced energy usage and lowered first cost. Chilled water plants have many components that draw substantial amounts of energy over the course of a year. The main energy users are the chillers, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, and cooling towers. Increasing energy costs over the past decade have given rise to the use of higher efficiency chillers. While these have gone a long way in reducing energy usage, there is more that can be done not only to reduce energy consumption but, at the same time, lower the installation cost.
