The big day finally arrived for the departure of the Australian Antarctic Division's re-supply ship Aurora Australis from Hobart. We had a great send-off from 150 or so people huddled on the pier to the accompaniment of an accordion and drummer who played for two hours prior to departure. All my family were there to wish me farewell and it was hard to hold back the tears; it was a happy but sad farewell. After pulling out from the pier it was not long before we were heading down the Derwent River and out into Storm Bay with the lights of Hobart disappearing behind us. The sea was kind throughout the night, however the further we went south the rougher it got with some big rolls and it became uncomfortable to move around the ship and difficult for some to sleep. With many years of sailing under my belt, it did not worry an old salt like myself.
