Texas-based low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines has ordered a further 33 Boeing 737-800s to accelerate the retirement of its 737-300 and -500 aircraft. The carrier has also converted the remaining 25 737-700 airframes it had on order to the larger -800 variant as well as adding two second-hand 737-700s to its fleet. Southwest had planned to phase out its 'Classic' fleet by 2021 but this has been brought forward to 2018. The airline recorded its 43rd consecutive year of profitability in 2015 thanks to a record annual net income (excluding special items) of $2.4bn. In April Southwest will launch its first international service from Los Angeles International Airport, linking the Californian airport with Liberia in Costa Rica.
