Engineers in NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate are looking for "game-changing" concepts for transmitting electrical power across space to run satellites, surface rovers and perhaps even human outposts on the Moon and other bodies, all with a view to saving launch mass by tapping the free energy flowing from the Sun. A new request for information (RFI) on "industry-developed power-beaming technology" is also the latest move in a growing trend at the U.S. space agency to set up partnerships with developers outside the government to share the expense and expertise needed to change the spaceflight game.
