摘要

By demonstrating a robotic capability to refuel satellites not designed for on-orbit servicing, NASA hopes to use the final flight of the space shuttle to help launch a new industry in the U.S. intended to extend the operational lifetimes of geosynchronous spacecraft. The Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM), a pilot project developed by the Goddard Space Flight Center team that designed hardware for the Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions, will be delivered to the International Space Station during the STS-135 mission on Atlantis (see p. 59). The payload consists of a box of tools and fittings and a tank of ethanol fuel that the station's Canadian-built Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM), also known as Dextre, can use to perform tasks needed to refuel a satellite. Those include cutting away thermal insulation and wires, removing protective caps, installing fuel valves and transferring fuel from one tank to another.
