Europe's fifth-largest airline, Air Berlin, can still be saved if its leaders take rapid and decisive measures, but many doubt the carrier's currently proposed initiatives will be enough.Joachim Hunold, CEO for 20 years, resigned Aug. 18, after Air Berlin posted worse-than-expected results for the first half of 2011, continuing its long and steady financial descent. The company suffered a €220 million ($317 million) operating loss in the first six months on sales of €1.9 billion. Its liquidity shrunk to €305 million from €508 million at the end of 2010. Hunold stepped down after key board members voiced serious criticism about his strategy.
