Engine manufacturers are set to make unprecedented use of flying testbeds despite the increased availability of ground-based simulation, modeling and testing capabilities. Sparking the ramp-up is a wave of new commercial airliner and business jet engine development programs, as well as five years of support work for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8 and 787 programs. During the coming weeks, for the first time, four 747 testbeds will be flying, while Honeywell is in the initial stages of using a 757-the only engine flying testbed of its type in the world (see p. 56).
