NASA says it will pay $51 million each for seats on Russia's Soyuz crew vehicle after the space shuttle retires, under a new $306-million contract modification for crew transportation and related services in 2012-13. The price includes training, launch preparation, crew rescue and landing for six International Space Station (ISS) crewmembers. The modification, which represents an increase from the $47 million price per seat of the current contract, covers two Soyuz flights in the spring of 2012 and two in the fall of 2012, with landings in the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013 after the normal six-month stays at the space station. Under its arrangements with non-Russian ISS partners, NASA also must fund Soyuz flights for their astronauts after the shuttle stops operating at the end of next year. Each seat includes the transportation of about 110 lb. of cargo to the station, 37 lb. of "down mass" and 66 lb. of trash back to Earth.
