摘要

I read your correspondence section with much interest, but continue to find it amusing that no one seems to understand why there are so few people in the U.S. earning degrees in engineering and science. I am a second-generation engineer, married to an engineer. Based on the state of the profession in the government aerospace sector, I can't recommend that my children pursue a technical career in any sector. Engineers and scientists are not valued and appreciated; thus they are not promoted in either the private or public sector. While engineers and scientists can make a decent living, they don't earn big salaries and bonuses, and aren't being named CEOs. Instead, engineers and scientists see managers who have been promoted beyond their technical competence. They should see managers with technical backgrounds who have risen through the ranks, and an environment fostering technical and career growth.
