Scientists and engineers on the 50-person team operating the New Horizons planetary probe will start planning for its July 2015 arrival at Pluto this year, incorporating lessons and scientific results from the nuclear-powered spacecraft's Feb. 28 flyby of Jupiter. Instruments designed for the cold and dark at the outer reaches of the Solar System generated more than 700 scientific observations as New Horizons picked up a 9,000-mph. gravity assist from Jupiter for the eight-year trek to Pluto. Despite the vastly different environment surrounding the gas giant, and the fact that only 70% of the 34 gigabits of data have been returned to Earth so far, the instruments have produced some startling discoveries and serendipitous observations.
