The International Air Transport Assn. (IATA) is pushing for fur-ther improvements in airline safety, as a series of accidents in 2005 highlights concerns over the level of performance in Africa and South America. IATA expects its members to have reduced the accident rate 25% by year's end, based on the 2004 level of 0.78 hull losses of Western-built aircraft per million sectors flown. By the end of the third quarter of 2005, IATA's senior vice president for safety, operations and infrastructure, Gunther Matschnigg, estimates the carriers reached 0.68. IATA also recently set a new target of 0.49 hull losses per million sectors to be achieved by the end of 2008.
